Review: I purchased an Ultimax about a year ago and have used it extensively in both long and short duration hikes. The pack is extremely tough, no feeble fabric anywhere on this puppy. The number of pouches is also a major bonus, as small element kit is easily accessible and makes acess so much easier (no need to unpack half your stuff to find one item).

In terms of size, this has to be as good as it gets. I've loaded this up for multinight hikes and it has the capacity for everything you will need. I sleep under the stars even in winter. I took this pack up Ben Nevis in December to sleep at the summit, it carried everything i needed and had room to spare (talking -40 deg TNF Dark Star, Prolite 4, Coleman Stove, plenty of food and water, the whole deal for a nice heavy uphill hike with a relaxing nights sleep).

The side pouches detach so you can trim down pack size if need be for a short duration lower burden hike (this is a killer feature making the pack so much more flexible).

Pound for pound this is the best pack ive come across, and i have seen most of them (including the Greg Denalis and Arc'Teryx). Since buying this quite a few of my hiking buddies have converted over and have purchased the ultimax.

In terms of downside, the only thing that bugs is probably the lack of ability to adjust the support straps for someone with a longer or shorter back. You can slacken/tighten the support straps so the waistband hangs higher/lower but if your pack is loaded the pack tend to lean back on you to much, which means it pulls on the shoulders more and makes movement much tougher (you lean forward more to compensate).

Still for most medium height guys, this pack is as good as they get. If you want a pack that scales from 100-135 litres then this is the one. I guarantee it is rainproof - and i am not taking some cheap nylon coated with silicone either - i scaled the side of a waterfall with my pack on, i got soaked through, but everything in the pack was bone dry. This is a really solid piece of kit. Apart from pouring pertol on the thing and setting it on fire, this pack should still be going strong long after you're dead and buried.

I'm a very tough marker, so consider this an excellent score.
